First Victory

Ayrton Senna wins his first Grand Prix, driving in the iconic John Player Special Lotus 97t with Renault V6 engine at Estoril (Portugal) 1985

Ayrton Senna signed for Lotus from Toleman in 1985 and took his first career pole in the second race that season at Estoril, Portugal.

This painting from 1996 shows Senna on the Sunday at Estoril, a race that was held in extremely wet conditions. He drove his John Player Special Lotus 97T-Renault from start to finish in front of the chasing pack and took his first career win. The inclement weather made things incredibly difficult and more seasoned drivers than the Brazilian, namely Alain Prost, ended up retiring.

The victory in Portugal was one of only two that season in a year dominated by Prost’s McLaren, though Senna’s class was obvious and he continued to impress during his three years at Lotus, eventually earning himself a drive in a top car at McLaren.
