Ultimate Mansell

This 1992 painting shows Nigel Mansell winning his home grand prix at Silverstone and flying the flag of Great Britain from within his class-leading Williams Renault FW14B. The mastermind behind the modern day Red Bull car was also leading the design team at Williams during the 1992 season. Adrian Newey perfected the design of an active suspension system that could electronically modify the suspension over the course of a lap, tailored to suit the challenges posed by individual corners. This combined with the previous season’s semi-automatic gearbox, traction control and anti-lock brakes made the FW14B an overwhelming force.

The system was so effective that the Williams cars were almost untouchable and Mansell cruised to the championship title by 52 points, including nine- race victories. Team-mate Riccardo Patrese secured one race victory and helped Williams take the constructors title by 65 points from McLaren.

Having greater upper body strength than his team-mate, Mansell was better at controlling the strange sensation created by driving at high speed with the active suspension, though was often left frustrated when he did not get the credit he felt he deserved for dominating the rest of the field. Upon hearing that Williams had signed Alain Prost to drive the following season, Mansell retired from Formula One and went to race Indy Cars for Newman Haas, where he again took the championship.
